Welcome to Year 5 - Fox

Welcome to Fox Class, Year 5 where the teachers are Mrs Watts and Mrs Christie. Here we will be sharing pictures and information so that you can see what we've been learning in school and share our adventures! Our topics this year are ‘One Giant Leap’, ‘Rule Britannia’ and ‘Mysterious Mayans’.

It is crucial that you still hear your child read in Year 5. As well as hearing your child read, it is still important to develop those inference and deduction skills by asking them about the meaning behind the text they are reading. Pupils should take home reading books daily and should always ensure that they have the book in school ready for the morning reading time. We have Home/School diaries which will go from home to school on a daily basis. Children will be responsible for looking after these diaries. This is where they record their new spellings to learn. It would be great if you can also use this diary to record when you have worked with your child. Children will get a sticker on their bookmark for every time they have read at home and can gain prizes for filling one side of this.
On our class page you will find a recommended reading list for Year 5. These books are suitable for Year 5 children; remember that all the pupils are registered in our local library – you do not need to buy them. You are not expected to read all of the books on the list; but should you want to share a book with your child, this will give you some ideas of good ones!

Future Meetings

There will be two parents evenings this year and it is vital that parents attend to review their child’s progress and find out what they can do to support pupils at home. We also hold an “open door” policy, so please feel free to talk to us if you have any concerns. If you need a longer discussion, it is always best to book an appointment.
Look out for our Inspire afternoon; where parents and carers are invited into school and the children will become the experts – showing you new skills they have learnt.

Homework Challenges

Homework is always a reinforcement of what has been taught at school and linked to our learning in class. Spellings are tested on a weekly basis and new spellings are sent out for the following week. These are best practiced in short 10 minute sections rather than just the night before. Times tables are also tested on a weekly basis with the 99 Club and Times Table Rockstars. We are asking you for your support to encourage children to complete tasks regularly.
